Razvan your assessment is in line with my way of thinking. In terms of increasing political inclusion, I recommend a community predominant agenda in preference to an ideological driven debate.

Absolutely valid point about the need to go the extra length with EU citizens resident in the UK especially those from the Central and Eastern Europe.

Indeed we often note the apathy and often the outright rejection of the democratic processes by these communities. Sadly they advocate a ‘I don’t do politics’ approach yet are the first to be impacted upon by austerity measures and the tendency of current centre-right governments to introduce labour market protectionist measures through stealth approaches.

We must accelerate and concentrate our efforts on awareness raising and direct engagement measures.

Came back empty-handed? He came back having prevented further damage to our country -- and in the EU that's an achievement. Abandoned by the Czechs? Didn't you hear the storming speech by Jan Zaharadil MEP in the Hemicycle yesterday supporting the Cameron Veto? Redwood and the Mail are calling it a triumph because that is exactly what it is -- a deliberate repudiation of "ever-closer-union", and of a failing EU that is making us poorer, and less democratic, and less free.

David Schoibl talks a great deal about rebalancing the British economy. and yet the kind of mesure that would be needed to rebuild Britain's industrial base - the only plausible means by which we could de-financialise our economy - would be in serious contravention of EU rules. We are at the point where positive government intervention - and yes subsidies - are necessary if we are to establish a viable alternative - FTT alone will hardly do the trick.

David Shoibl also calls for a of europe wide referenda on policy issues. Yet, for votes to have any real democratic value, their needs to be some kind of unified public sphere encompassing those who are asked to take part - the prerequisite to any kind of unified debate. Other such an excersise is not means by which the people can exercise power, but is instead simply the aggregation of individual preferences. Now, Shoibl might declare himself a citizen of Europe, and I'm sure some Prospect wonks might take an interest in continental social democracy, but in the grand scheme of things, it is blindingly obvious that no such public sphere exists.

I was very pleased to learn in an email from Martin Phillips about the setting up of the Labour Friends of Germany. Sadly I am unable to attend the launch on 13 September as I am away at the British Science Association conference in Bradford, but I hope it gets off to a good start. I would really like to be kept informed of subsequent activities, as I had many close links and friendships with German colleagues in the European Parliament during my time as an MEP. People such as Klaus Hench, Lilo Siebel-Emmerling, Dieter Rogalla, Martin Schultz and many others.

As I convene activities of the Group of former Labour MEPs, I will draw their attention to the existence of the Labour Friends of Germany when I next communicate with them.

Best wishes,

Michael Elliott.
